Reading for Pleasure

Reading for Pleasure

Reading is the foundation of all learning

Reading Vision

At Mossford Green Primary School , children understand that reading opens doors for them. It helps them to stand in the shoes of hundreds of other people. To live a thousand different lives.  Children know that reading helps them to improve their language and vocabulary skills. That reading better equips them to be successful in all areas of learning throughout their education.

We strive to give all children a life-long love of reading, as well as to develop the skills they need to prepare them for the next stage of their journeys.

How We Teach Reading at Mossford Green

Reading is the foundation of all learning at Mossford Green.  In Nursery, this begins with reading exciting books as a class, reading and singing nursery rhymes and the teaching of early phonics.  By the time children are in reception, each child will have a colour banded book closely matching their phonics skills.  Children will read one-to-one with an adult and discuss the book they are reading. Quality books will also be the basis of their learning in of all key areas and systematic phonics teaching continues daily with targeted interventions for groups and individuals.

In year 1, children continue to learn decoding skills through daily phonics teaching, as well as reading one-to-one with an adult.  Children also have 15 minutes per day to read to themselves.  Children also focus on quality texts in small groups with a teacher where they discuss vocabulary, inference and retrieval questions.

By the time the children are in year 2 and throughout KS2, children will begin studying books in depth as a whole class for 25 minutes per day. In these whole class reading sessions, the children will explore deeper questions about a text, including discussions based on a range of issues e.g. semantic, intratextual, narratological, prosodic foci.  This is in addition to an hour of daily English teaching where reading may also be the focus.  Children will continue to read their own book to themselves for 15 minutes per day as well.

This means that every child will have at least 40 minutes of reading focus every day.

As well as book corners in every classroom, the school also has a well stocked library that all the children visit on a fortnightly basis.  The children also visit our local library, Fullwell cross Library, every six weeks to choose a book.

Diversity

At Mossford Green, we are passionate about the characters and authors reflecting our diverse community. That is why we have heavily invested in books with BAME characters for all our classrooms and our library.

We are constantly looking for new books and authors that will appeal to all our children and encourage our parents, carers and children to make suggestions!
